Remember that feeling you get when your favorite TV show has reached its end? The final episode of the last season wraps up the characters’ storylines, the outro song starts to play, and you fall into this strange void. Yes, September 17 was one of those days that brought that specific feeling, because one of the best romantic teen drama series on Prime Video came to an end after three years. The Summer I Turned Pretty, which is based on the best-selling romance novel trilogy by Jenny Han, ended with an 11-episode-long third season, and it was an emotional turmoil, to say the least.
Over the course of the seasons, the main character, Belly Conklin (Lola Tung), becomes entangled in a complicated love triangle with two brothers, Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah Fisher (Gavin Casalegno). Although the highly anticipated series finale, with its feature-film-length runtime, revealed who Belly would end up with, the ending still left some fans wanting more. Fans of the books will know that Belly and Conrad were always endgame, but it was only confirmed in the final episode. After being stuck in that painfully familiar post-final-season void, the best news ever was announced only hours later. This is not a drill: a Summer I Turned Pretty movie is in development, so let’s take a look at everything we know about it.
What Will ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ Movie Be About?
Needless to say, the The Summer I Turned Pretty movie will follow our favorite characters as we know them and explore their future in more detail. Jenny Han revealed in an interview with Glamour that:
“With a love story, usually the end is when two people get together, and you don’t really get to see much beyond that. Rather than doing a five-minute sort of montage or flash-forward at the end of the season, I would rather really give it its due and do a movie.”
Well, the writer is absolutely right, and fans are certainly longing to see more of Belly and Conrad. Considering that the third season, in particular, was primarily focused on (sometimes) lovey-dovey moments and also messy times between Belly and Jeremiah, seeing Bonrad happily together will make up for the shortcomings of Season 3 and be a healing experience. Yes, Jeremiah also very likely got his happy ending with Denise, but let’s be honest, there is no need to dive any deeper into that. Sorry, Jeremiah lovers.
Furthermore, Han has said that Belly has “a big milestone left”, and she would love to focus on it. The writer and showrunner of the YA success hasn’t revealed what important step she meant, but avid readers of the romance novels might agree that she was likely talking about Belly and Conrad’s wedding. The two end up tying the knots in the last novel, which clearly hasn’t been a part of the series. Perhaps the movie will highlight the process, the hurdles, and the achievement of the milestone.
Who Will Return for ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ Movie?
This probably won’t come as a surprise, but both Lola Tung and Christopher Briney will return to reprise their roles as two of the best main characters in The Summer I Turned Pretty, Belly Conklin and Conrad Fisher, respectively. With the two actors reprising their roles, the movie promises to capture the series’ most memorable moments. Though not yet confirmed, many other familiar faces are expected to return. The Summer I Turned Pretty is known for its tight-knit relationships, particularly between Belly and her family and best friend, Taylor.
The final season of the Prime Video original series concluded with Taylor and Steven agreeing to move to California together, where Belly’s brother has a major business opportunity awaiting him. Their new endeavors could easily be explored further, as the two play a significant role in Belly’s life. The last scene of the series showed Belly and Conrad visiting the summer house in Cousins, implying that this is where they will reside in the future. However, Conrad studied in California, and there is a chance that the new couple is open to exploring a future there as well, while still keeping the summer house.
Then there is also Jeremiah, of course, who got significantly close to Denise in the last episode of Jenny Han’s adaptation. While Jeremiah is working on becoming a successful chef, Denise will join Steven in California so that they can bring their shared business to life. Who knows, maybe all of them will cross paths again in the upcoming The Summer I Turned Pretty movie? Time will tell.
When Will ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ Movie Be Released?
Unfortunately, there is no release date yet for The Summer I Turned Pretty movie, as filming hasn’t started. Han told NBC that “we don’t know when it’s coming out, but not next year. We still have to make it.” It is a bummer to know that we have to go at least a year without more Bonrad content, especially after the heartwarming ending of The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3, but it will likely be worth the wait.
Jenny Han is undoubtedly dedicated to putting the best movie out and ensuring that Belly and Conrad’s love story continues beautifully. Hopefully, 2027 will be the year in which The Summer I Turned Pretty returns to our screens. The Summer I Turned Pretty is available to stream on Prime Video.
