Timothée Chalamet has had a busy past couple of years. Following his success in smaller supporting roles between the years of 2014 and 2017, the actor would soon make a name for himself in larger roles in movies created by prestige directors like Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me By Your Name, Greta Gerwig’s films Lady Bird and Little Women, and Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch. However, it would be in 2021 that Chalamet would truly rise to fame for his portrayal as Paul Atreides in Denis Villineuve’s Dune. Now a leading man in his own right, there’s only one kind of role that Chalamet isn’t looking to do anytime soon.
In an interview with Vogue as part of their cover story that details Chalamet’s career up to this point, the actor was asked if he would ever make another television show, with which he provided the blunt and simple answer of “no.” Before his work in feature films, the actor had his first break in a recurring role on the series Homeland, in which he appeared for 8 episodes. Besides hosting Saturday Night Live and appearing in the Kid Cudi Netflix animated series Entergalactic, Chalamet hasn’t had any significant television roles since 2012.
Chalamet’s answer is surprising, especially considering the kind of talent that has been circling television and streaming projects as of late. As the myriad of streaming services continues to compete for subscribers and original content, there has also been a surge in big-name actors attaching themselves to limited series. Whether it’s Gary Oldman in Slow Horses for Apple TV or Mark Ruffalo for the HBO series Task, there’s been an abundance of talent on the small screen. However, it seems that Chalamet is dedicated to creating a career in feature films, and especially get awards recognition for his efforts.
Timothée Chalamet Is Driven to Continue Working in Film, Not Television
In the same interview with Vogue, Chalamet would discuss losing the Best Actor Oscar to Adrien Brody at the Oscars this past year. Brody had won for his performance in The Brutalist, while Chalmet was nominated for his work as Bob Dylan in the James Mangold biopic A Complete Unknown. The actor would describe the feeling, saying: “If there’s five people at an awards show, and four people go home losing, you don’t think those four people are at the restaurant like, ‘Damn, we didn’t win?” The actor’s willingness to admit his frustration with not taking home the award is admirable, and often a side that performers tend to hide from the public.
So, while many actors are finding work and acclaim on television, Chalamet seems determined to find his recognition and love for the craft on the big screen. The next big film Chalamet has lined up is Marty Supreme, directed by Josh Safdie, which has already had a select few screenings, with people praising Chalamet’s performance as the titular character and even already in talks as being one of the frontrunners in the Best Actor Oscar Race. Chalamet is also currently filming Denis Villenueve’s Dune: Part Three, which will see his character in a vastly different place than he was in the first two films. Overall, there’s plenty of challenging feature film work on the road ahead for Chalamet.
