Wicked fans don’t have long to wait until they can venture down the Yellow Brick Road for another sweeping fantasy adventure. Wicked: For Good, the second installment of Jon M. Chu’s two-part screen adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical will open in theaters Nov. 21, 2025, with a story that picks up after the events of the last film. Elphaba Thropp (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda Upland (Ariana Grande) parted ways during an emotional farewell at the climax, and now they must continue down their diverging paths, but they won’t be alone as a few new faces are set to appear, including some that will be familiar to fans of The Wizard of Oz.
As teased in the trailers for Wicked: For Good, the upcoming film features original characters from The Wizard of Oz, such as Dorothy Gale, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion, who will be voiced by an Oscar-nominated actor. However, Chu has now confirmed that Dorothy will be seen, but her face will not be shown, following some speculation about the identity of the character. “I didn’t want to step on who you think Dorothy is in whatever story that you came into this with,” he explained to People, while emphasizing that the sequel “is still Elphaba and Glinda’s journey, and she is a pawn in the middle of all of it.”
While the character’s face will be hidden from view, Dorothy is expected to have a large presence in the story, as she serves as a catalyst for the events in Elphaba and Glinda’s respective journeys. The creative decision to not give Dorothy a full reveal in Wicked: For Good might come as a surprise, but it is understandable, given that the musical – and now the film adaptations – turn the spotlight on the two witches rather than Dorothy. It also avoids contradicting any preconceived notions that audiences might have of the iconic character, who was famously portrayed by Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz and Fairuza Balk in Return to Oz.
Who Is Playing Dorothy in ‘Wicked: For Good’?
It has yet to be confirmed who is playing Dorothy in Wicked: For Good, but fans have theorized that Abigail actress, Alisha Weir, will be taking on the iconic role after they noticed that she was wearing silver shoes on the red carpet at the Wicked premiere in London (the ruby slippers were originally silver in the books). Alisha’s sister Katie also hinted at her role on TikTok, as she shared her reaction to the Wicked: For Good trailer, and fans noticed how much she struggled to fight back her smile whenever Dorothy appeared on-screen.
The reactions to Wicked: For Good have been overwhelmingly positive, echoing Alisha’s sister, with early viewers calling it a “heartbreakingly tender conclusion,” suggesting that Universal has another tentpole hit coming up. The positivity for the film is already generating Oscar buzz, with the upcoming awards campaign expected to promote Erivo for Best Actress and Grande for Best Supporting Actress, the same categories they were nominated for with Wicked, which itself would be a rare feat (being nominated for the same role twice). However, fans will have a better idea of their chances when Wicked: For Good arrives on the big screen.
